Tonight while playing monopoly with my girlfriend I decided to give my never-been-used vinyl version of Murder City's R.I.P. a spin on my turntable. For those who don't know, R.I.P. is MCD's live album documenting their last show ever. This recording left many people scratching their heads as the quality of the recording is questionable and according to pretentious retards pitchforkmedia, its filled with "out of tune guitars, broken and/or exploding microphones, shit-faced band and audience members tackling each another, drum sets toppling, spotty sound, peripheral noise, indecipherable vocals, and plenty of beer-fueled pontificating." Pitchfork rated the album a 3.0 out of 10. The female reviewer also made a point of mentioning trendy it-band the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Carona in the review. Why? Because pitchfork sucks. But I digress... While I'm sure pitchforkmedia are not the only ones to not get what is appealing about Murder City Devils, tonight I couldn't help but feel that this recording embodies everything Murder City was all about. Booze, Puke, and Blood. So tonight I decided to pay a tribute to the Murder City Devils, endysis style. I mean they opened up for PEARL JAM people!

The Hookers - s/t - Cold Crush Records

The Hookers: Spencer Moody (vocals); Dann Gallucci (guitar); Derek Fudesco (bass); Andrea Zollo (drums).

This is where it all began. With some early versions of songs Murder City would end up playing both on record and live. Spencer Moody's voice sounds like this was made when he was like 16. Probably mainly for fans of MCD, but I think everyone should have it.

Tracklist:
1. What You Need
2. Officer
3. Crush
4. Broken Glass
5. Finger Tips
6. Fire
7. Devils Blue
8. Tell You Brother

Murder City Devils - s/t - Die Young Stay Pretty Records

The Murder City Devils: Dann Gallucci (vocals, guitar, mellotron); Nate Manny (vocals, guitar); Derek Fudesco (vocals, bass); Coady Willis (vocals, drums); Spencer Moody (vocals); Leslie Hardy (organ, keyboards); Gabe (roadie)

Although this album is quite underproduced, some of The Devil's most pure rocknroll is off of this album. Probably their most well known tune (especially in strip clubs that sport tattooed strippers) is on this album, Boom Swagger Boom. But for my money, give me Flashbulb, Broken Glass, and Tell You Brother.

1. Dance Hall Music
2. It's In My Heart
3. Boom Swagger Boom
4. Get Off The Floor
5. Flashbulb
6. Broken Glass
7. Murder City Riot
8. Sick Of Dreaming
9. Make It On My Own
10. Tell You Brother

Murder City Devils - Broken Bottles Empty Hearts - Sub Pop

Depending on how you read the packaging, this album is called either Broken Bottles Empty Hearts, or Empty Bottles Broken Hearts. Either one is awesome. I remember Eric and I driving down to the valley a few months ago and we were discussing this album. We both agreed that it has one of the best album openers EVER. But honestly, I cant really find anything wrong with this album. But if I had to pick some favorites, they would be I Want a Lot Now (So Come On), Dancin Shoes, 18 Wheels, Dear Hearts, Stars in Her Eyes, and Every Shitty Thing (which itself is a hell of a way to end an album). If you buy the 7" vinyl for Dancin Shoes, the B-side has a swell tune called TOKYO GOLD.

1. I Want A Lot Now (So Come On)
2. Dancin' Shoes
3. 18 Wheels
4. Left Hand Right Hand
5. Ready For More
6. Cradle To The Grave
7. Dear Hearts
8. Hey Sailor
9. Johnny Thunders
10. Stars In Her Eyes
11. Another Round On You
12. Every Shitty Thing

Murder City Devils - In Name and Blood - Sub Pop

This album is dangerous. Like Micheal Jackson dangerous. You just might notice that after listening to this album a few times you start to really want to hit your head on things. And you will. There are a few notable things about this album. First off, the album art depicts each bandmember's gruesome "death scene". Second, if you buy this on vinyl, you get a bonus song which is a cover of "Hybrid Moments" by some band called the Misfits. If you buy the Canadian version of the CD, you get a bonus track called "Little Red Book", which is a Burt Bacharach cover. Buddyhead records released split 7" with MCD and At the Drive-In, which had a song from each band remixed by the Latch Brothers (which features MIKE D from the Beastie Boys). The song that gets remixed is "Press Gang" and it is currently available on the Buddyhead Suicide Compilation. Also Track 6, "I'll Come Running", is a Neil Diamond Cover. The songs I recomend are the whole fuckin thing.

1. Press Gang
2. I Drink The Wine
3. Bunkhouse
4. Idle Hands
5. Rum To Whiskey
6. I'll Come Running
7. Demon Brother
8. Lemuria Rising
9. Somebody Else's Baby
10. In This Town
11. No Grave But The Sea
12. Fields Of Fire

Murder City Devils - Thelema - Sub Pop

Their last studio release. This EP is a must have. Every song is different yet everone is good. The last song "364 Days" is originally from a Christmas 7" they did that had a B-side called "Dead By Christmas". Murder City Christmas songs, who woulda thunk it? All the tunes on this album are among my favorites. The credited producers are Uber-producer/badass Matt Bayles and ex-Tool bassist Paul D'amour.

1. That's What You Get
2. Bear Away
3. Midnight Service At The Mutter Museum
4. One Vision Of May
5. Bride Of The Elephant Man
6. 364 Days

Murder City Devils - R.I.P. - Sub Pop

There is a DVD available of the show that I highly recomend as well. I think the thing that threw a lot of people off about MCD live is that Spencer didn't sing the songs the same as on the records. I dont really know if this was on purpose or because he was drunk or what, but it definately doesn't bother me. This live album contains what just might be MCD's finest song, I only wish they had stayed together long enough to record it in a studio, but at the same time its kind of fitting that its only recorded existence is in their swan song. This song is called "Waltz". It should be noted that the last track "The Grace That Saves" is a new song as well.

1. Bear Away
2. I Drink The Wine
3. One Vision Of May
4. Midnight Service In The Mutter Museum
5. I Want A Lot Now
6. Rum To Whiskey
7. Dancing Shoes
8. Waltz
9. Dear Hearts
10. That's What You Get
11. Idle Hands
12. Boom Swagger Boom
13. Dance Hall Music
14. Cradle To The Grave
15. Murder City Riot
16. Press Gang
17. Broken Glass
18. 18 Wheels
19. Grace That Saves

And here is the DVD:

A great documentary DVD on MCD:

POST-MURDER CITY DEVILS

The members have been involved with a bunch of good projects after the demise of the mighty Murder City. Of course I am not talking about PRETTY GIRLS MAKE GRAVES, which has Derek Fudesco (the bass player) in it. It also has Andrea Zollo (whho played drums in The Hookers and sang backup on Boom Swagger Boom). I personally think that band sucks and the only people I've talked to who are into them are chicks. Their name is a referance to the mutherfukking SMITHS, okay?!? But here is the rest:

Dead Low Tide - s/t - Tiger Style Records

Dead Low Tide: Spencer Moody (vocals), Nate Manny (guitar), Coady Willis (drums), Mike Kunka (bass), Gabe (roadie)

Take three parts MCD and one part Godheadsilo and you get Dead Low Tide. This band lasted 9 months. Long enough to go through on tour of opening for the Melvins. Their album came out like two years after they called it quits. Jeryl saw them on the Melvins tour and I still plot his murder to this day for that. This shit is for real, though.

1. Barrel Vault
2. White Flag
3. Navy Buttons
4. Blues Come Easy
5. Ill Eagle
6. Lazer Lazer Lazer Love
7. Purple Crimson And Lavender
8. Don't Mind If I Do
9. Sideways Machine
10. Shake And Slide

John and Spencer Booze Explosion - s/t - Tiger Style Records

The John & Spencer Booze Explosion: John Atkins, Spencer Moody, Joe Plummer, Phil Ek, Dann Gallucci.

I dont really know a whole lot about this project except for that all the songs are covers, Spencer actually sings, and its good mid-day drinking music. I recomend "Lady Bird" and "Black Douleur". I know "Boxing" is a Ben Folds cover but all the other ones Im not so sure about. A quick google search yielded no help.

1. Girls And The Dogs, The
2. Black Douleur
3. Lady Bird
4. Felicity
5. Boxing
6. Jesus

Smoke and Smoke - Love Suffers Long - French Kiss Records

Smoke And Smoke: Spencer Moody, Mike Kunka, Dan Haugh

This band is Spencer w/ the two guys from Godheadsilo. One thing you will know after listening to this album: Smoke and Smoke do not give a fuck. This album is nine songs in under 20 minutes. Their website is still up (www.smokeandsmokepracticespot.com), if you want to peep some videos or sample some tracks. The first songs name turns out to be an actual joke, as the punchline is the first line of the song. Brilliant.

1. How Did The Cook Get His Finger Stuck In The Dishwasher?
2. Into The Smoke And Smoke
3. Bathrobe Jacket
4. Strike Lightning Strike
5. Teeming With Eyes
6. Throw The Lever
7. Boys, Books, And Kitty Cats
8. Abandon Ship
9. Smoke And Smoke Against The Machine

Big Business - Head for the Shallow - Hydra Head Records

Big Business: Jared Warren (bass instrument); Coady Willis (drums)

Coady is MCD's drummer and Jared Warren is from a few bands but most notably Karp. So check out this confusing web of connections:
In Jared's band Karp, the drummer (as a small child) was babysat by a 12 yearold Buzz Osbourne who grew up to form The Melvins. As the Melvins are off influencing people like KURDT COBAIN, three young sillies from aberdeen, WA. grow up and start a Melvins-influenced band called Karp. A few years after this, the Murder City Devils break up, and three of the members form DEAD LOW TIDE. They get the opening gig on one of the Melvins tours. Dead Low Tide breaks up around the time that Karp breaks up. Eventually Big Business forms makes building crumble. The Melvins fire yet another bass player and are in need. Who do they call upon? Big Business! That is right my friends, Big Business and the Melvins are now ONE BAND!
This from myspace:

Seriously, this album is some of the best shit Ive heard in a long time. Buy it. These guys are ruthless. I've seen them twice and both times their equipment wasn't working but they still rocked it anyway.
OH I ALMOST FORGOT! Their are signed to Hydra Head which is run by Aaron Turner from Isis who is going to be opening for TOOL on their next tour. Tool and the Melvins are good friends. Connections CONNECTIONS CONNECTIONS!!!! Sorry..........

1. O.G.
2. Focus Pocus
3. White Pizazz
4. Stareadactyl
5. Easter Romantic
6. Technically Electrified
7. Eis Hexe
8. Off Off Broadway

Triumph of Lethargy Skinned Alive to Death - Helpless - Make Break Records

TOLSATD: Spencer Moody and Corey Brewer

I didn't even know this band existed untill I accidently saw them perform when I was seeing Modest Mouse (which Dan Gallucci from MCD is now in). Everyone hated them except for me, Lord Bearded, and Levi, I think. Being in a state of shock for most of their set, my fondest memory of any concert is during this one. Spencer and Corey playing and doing various things during the performance of their song "I Made a List", during which many many emo kids are yelling at them to get off of the stage and throwing things at them. The song is about "dragger-downers" and everysingle time Spencer would say "You're on my List" he would put the microphone down into the face of one of the emo naysayers who would then scream profanities at him. I dont really know what that is called but I have a suspicion its like a box of tsunamis nestled in with some hurricanes an shit. This is their website: http://www.triumphoflethargyskinnedalivetodeath.com. You can download some songs and even a whole "lost" album! Have fun! Oh, and one last note: They sound completely different live then they do on their recordings.

1. Demolition Man
2. The Salted Ones, Into the Mud
3. The Morning Trumpets Failure
4. There is a Town
5. Intro
6. Helpless
7. Svevo Bandini
8. Salt
9. Sincerely, L. Cohen
10. I Made a List
11. The Pleasures of My Life

A Gun Called Tension - s/t - Cold Crush Records

A Gun Called Tension: Sean Reveron, Dann Gallucci

All I can really say is this shit is awesome. The track "Treason" features Spencer and Coady.

1. Hero
2. Gold Fronts
3. Interview
4. 5 + 1
5. Treason
6. Electric Chair
7. Foundation
8. Lyrics Lyrics
9. 7th Of May
10. Thelonious
11. Document
12. Thelonious - (remix)
